In the 1930s, a rural boy named Tang Shuisheng comes to Shanghai to seek refuge with his uncle Liu (Li Xuejian). Under his recommendation, he becomes the personal servant of the dance queen Xiao Jinbao (Gong Li). Xiao Jinbao is the woman of the powerful Tang Laoye (Li Baotian) in Shanghai, but she is having an affair with his subordinate Song Erye, who has long coveted Tang Laoye's position. Liu's sudden death makes Tang Laoye wary, and he takes Xiao Jinbao, Shuisheng, and others to an island where only the widow Cuihua and her two children are hiding, ordering a ruthless killing of anyone unfamiliar who comes to the island. Through her interactions with Cuihua, Xiao Jinbao gains a different understanding of life and gradually becomes very dissatisfied with Tang Laoye's cruelty; however, her fate is still in Tang Laoye's hands.
