Veteran of the American Civil War Ethan Edwards (played by John Wayne) returns to his hometown in Texas after the war, hoping to reunite with his family at his brother's farm. Ethan has long harbored feelings for his sister-in-law, keeping them hidden. However, a Comanche raid shatters Ethan's hopes. In this Indian attack, both his brother and sister-in-law are killed, and his niece Debbie (played by Natalie Wood) is abducted, her fate unknown. To avenge his beloved sister-in-law and find Debbie, Ethan, accompanied by his brother’s adopted son Martin (played by Jeffrey Hunter), embarks on a difficult journey. Ethan spends five years and offers a bounty to find Chief Scar, but his deep-seated hatred for the Indians and nearly insane actions lead Martin to doubt Ethan's true reasons for searching for Debbie. Martin even fears that Ethan may kill Debbie, who has been assimilated by the Indians.
