Sir Wilfrid Robarts (played by Charles Laughton), a renowned criminal defense lawyer in London, undergoes treatment for heart disease but remains physically weak. On the first day home for recuperation, a nurse strictly monitors his medication and forbids him from smoking and drinking. The butler even installs an elevator to help him get upstairs more easily. However, this array of concern and care has no effect on this unruly and sharp-tongued barrister, who becomes excited instead by the arrival of a lawsuit. Lawyer Mayhew and the client, Leonard Vole (played by Tyrone Power), visit him to ask for his help in a legal case. It turns out that Vole has met a wealthy woman, and although her servant looks down on his invention of an egg beater, she is deeply in love with him and even changes her will to leave him £80,000. Tragedy strikes when the wealthy woman is murdered, making Vole the prime suspect. His only witness is his wife Christine (played by Marlene Dietrich), but her coldness and calmness during the visit raise Sir Wilfrid's suspicions that there are hidden secrets at play. Behind the enigmatic case lies a tangled web of secrets that cannot be revealed... This film is adapted from Agatha Christie's novel of the same name.
