Zatoichi, who set out on a journey to witness the first sunrise of Mount Fuji, seriously injured five yakuza who attacked him along the way with a momentary swift move. Once healed, the five men set out in pursuit of Ichi. At that time, Ichi had taken a boat trip to Enoshima but, realizing that a gambling scheme was taking place on board, turned the tables by using the scam to extract a large sum of money. There, he encountered the roguish, shogi-loving ronin, Jumonji. Upon arriving at Enoshima, Ichi was summoned by the leader of the con artists, Ejimaya, and found himself surrounded by drawn swords, but with his skilled quick reflexes, Ejimaya and his men retreated. However, during this commotion, a young girl named Miki, who was with a street performer named Otane, was injured. Her wound worsened and became tetanus. Feeling responsible, Ichi gathered money using the exceptional skill of the Juman Dori style, which he inherited from Jumonji, to buy an antidote made from Southeast Asian medicinal herbs for tetanus. Miki's wound healed completely thanks to Ichi's medicine. However, while traveling to a hot spring in Hakone with Miki, Ichi met ailing young samurai Tomoyoshin and his sister Kume, as well as their companion Rokuhira. Tomoyoshin and the others were wandering in search of their father's avenger. But one night, the only man who knew the face of their enemy, Rokuhira, was killed with a fishing line. The next morning, Ichi found a bobber, favored by Jumonji, floating in the Benten Pond where Rokuhira had been murdered. Doubts about Jumonji started to surface. Perhaps sensing this, Jumonji began to radiate a murderous intent towards Ichi. Furthermore, from Tomoyoshin's testimony, they learned that the enemy had a peculiar habit of clicking his fingers while playing shogi, which was unmistakably the same habit exhibited by Jumonji during their matches. The next day, Ichi and Jumonji set out from their inn accompanied by the healed Miki and Otane. While walking through the winding mountains of Hakone, both men were mentally playing shogi and waiting for the right moment to confront each other. In an instant, both drew their swords. However, it was Jumonji who fell. After swiftly defeating the pursuing five men with his signature surprise attack, Ichi walked away into the mountains, leaving behind Miki's voice calling out to him.
