Orphan Heidi (played by Shirley Temple) lives with Aunt Dete (played by Mady Christians), but Dete is unwilling to continue caring for her niece and decides to send Heidi all the way to the remote home of her grandfather, Old Adolph (played by Jean Hersholt). Initially, Grandpa Adolph, who is immersed in sorrow from losing his son, ignores this granddaughter he has never met, but over time, their bond deepens. However, the greedy Dete returns and tricks Heidi away, wanting to sell her as a maid. The angelic Heidi forms a close friendship with the weak daughter of the household, Anna (played by Helen Westley); on the other hand, Adolph embarks on a journey to find his granddaughter...
