The elderly Lou (Walter Matthau) has three daughters, but he rarely sees them; usually, his daughters only call to check on their old father. His eldest daughter, Georgina (Diane Keaton), is the busy editor of a women's magazine and works hard in her high-powered job every day; the second daughter, Ivy (Meg Ryan), is beautiful but also lacks communication with her father; as for the youngest daughter, she is an actress, not enormously famous but still enjoys her work. Lou has never taken much care of his daughters or shown much interest in their lives, which has unknowingly created a barrier between him and them. He leads a lonely life in his old age, while his daughters are busy with their own work and lives.
