On the eve of the millennium, awkward 12-year-old orphan Beverly Moody (played by Gemma Brooke Allen) discovers a damaged mixtape made by her parents when they were young. Her grandmother Gail (played by Julie Bowen), who raised Beverly, was also a teenage mother and experienced the pain of losing a daughter, making her reluctant to talk about that heartbreaking past. Beverly wants to take this opportunity to learn more about her parents. Thus, she embarks on a journey to find the songs included in the mixtape. Along the way, she meets her quirky neighbor Alan (played by Audrey Hsieh), the seemingly fierce Nicky (played by Olga Petsa), and the cynical record store owner Afan (played by Nick Thune), who provides Beverly with clues to find the songs and helps her reconcile with Gail.
