In 1937, German businessman John Rabe (played by Ulrich Tukur), who had lived in Nanjing, China for many years, and his wife Dora prepare to return to Germany. He hands over his position at Siemens' Chinese branch to an heir, but on the day of the farewell dance, the Japanese army begins bombing Nanjing, causing chaos, arson, and looting. Panicked residents flee in all directions, and Rabe resolutely opens the doors of his company to shelter Chinese employees and other refugees. Foreign missionaries, doctors, and businessmen in Nanjing discuss establishing an "International Safety Zone" to protect innocent civilians, and Rabe is elected as its chairman. Initially planning to return home the next day, Rabe decides to stay and help save innocent people. As he witnesses the inhumane atrocities inflicted by the Japanese imperial army on the people of Nanjing, Rabe becomes more proactive, using his wits alongside his companions to try to save more lives. An increasing number of refugees flood into the safety zone, far exceeding their expectations. Meanwhile, the Japanese army's violence escalates and reacts angrily to Rabe's humanitarian efforts, leading to multiple assaults on the safety zone and making supplies increasingly difficult to obtain. With hundreds of thousands of innocent lives waiting for Rabe to save them, how will he fulfill this humanitarian mission under enormous pressure?
