Charlotte (played by Bette Davis) can be considered an old maid. She sports a stiff hairstyle, wears conservative clothing, and has a peculiar personality. To make matters worse, it seems she has developed a bad habit of drinking. On her family's suggestion, Charlotte decides to embark on a journey of emotional healing by boarding a cruise ship bound for distant shores.
On the cruise, Charlotte encounters a man named Jerry (played by Paul Henreid) and, through a series of misunderstandings, forms a deep friendship with Jerry’s daughter. Soon, Charlotte finds herself falling in love. However, at this time, Jerry is not free; he is in an unresolved marriage. Heartbroken, Charlotte chooses to leave, and shortly thereafter, her mother passes away.
