Baby John Clayton is orphaned and taken in by the ape Kala. Raised by Kala, he grows up and sees her as his real mother, naming himself Tarzan, which means "white skin" in the language of apes. Tarzan becomes the king of the apes. When humans invade the forest, Kala is killed, and Tarzan accidentally saves Belgian Captain Philippe D'Arnot. The captain discovers that Tarzan, based on the necklace around his neck, is the legitimate heir to the estate of Lord Greystoke and takes him back to England.
