One morning, Zatoichi was suddenly attacked by thugs, killing one and severing the arm of another. Disgusted by such a bloody journey, Zatoichi visited his former master, Hikoniichi, who had once taught him massage, and his daughter, Osayo, at the Asou inn. However, Hikoniichi had been murdered, and Osayo had been forced into a life of prostitution under the local gang leader, Tatsu Gorou, whose name she now bore as Nishiki. Astonished, Zatoichi sought out Osayo at the Chiji building. But Osayo was confined in a storehouse after being brutally punished for refusing to comply with the demands of Isoida Kouemon from the regional government office, who was in Tatsu Gorou's employ. Sneaking into the storehouse, Zatoichi learned the details of the incident from Osayo. --Hikoniichi had left for Kyoto with 300 ryo of gold to receive the highest honor for massage, but he was murdered on the way and his gold was stolen. Furthermore, Tatsu Gorou took advantage of his kindness by lending 100 ryo, which he used to force Osayo into becoming a courtesan at Chiji-- That night, Zatoichi was called upon by Tatsu Gorou's bodyguard, who went by the name of Idojiri Gunjirou, to massage his shoulders. Seizing the opportunity, Zatoichi pried information from Gunjirou about Tatsu Gorou's behavior, but when the conversation turned to Hikoniichi's murder, Gunjirou fell silent. Another bodyguard, Kadozawa Koheita, observing Zatoichi, sensed a dangerous atmosphere. Meanwhile, a bookkeeping investigation by the eight-prefecture patrol began at the regional government office. Fearing exposure of their crimes, Kadozawa seized 100 ryo from Isoida and then swiftly confronted Zatoichi, who had found himself surrounded by officers for the murder of a patrolman. This was a scheme orchestrated by Tatsu Gorou and Isoida. Facing imminent danger after being disarmed by Katsu, Gunjirou's daughter, Otsuru, Gunjirou, motivated by Zatoichi's sense of justice, retrieved the weapon from Otsuru and handed it to Zatoichi. With a fierce roar, Zatoichi delivered his lethal two-stage cut, staining both Tatsu Gorou and Isoida in crimson.
