In 1942, during the height of World War II, Japan was unstoppable on various battlefields across Asia. In the tropical jungles of Java in the Dutch East Indies, a Japanese POW camp stood. Captain Yonoi (played by Ryuichi Sakamoto) and Sergeant Ohara (played by Takeshi Kitano) jointly managed the camp. Ohara was rough and ruthless, showing no mercy to Western prisoners and being especially cruel to those with homosexual inclinations. In contrast, the handsome Yonoi appeared much more gentlemanly. British Army Major Jack (played by David Bowie) was charming and dashing. His first appearance moved Yonoi’s heart. In the POW camp where same-sex relationships were prevalent, many emotions could not be controlled. In the days that followed, the two oscillated between national grievances and personal feelings, engaging in a painful and brutal struggle within their hearts… This film is adapted from British author Lawrence van der Post's novel and won the Audience Choice Award for Best Film at the 1984 Kinema Junpo Film Awards, as well as five other awards including Best Director, Best Film, Best Score, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor (Takeshi Kitano) at the Daily Film Awards in 1984.
