A new lodger (played by Ivor Novello) is suspected by landlady (played by Marie Ault) and her husband (played by Arthur Chesney) of being the infamous "Avenger", but their daughter, model Daisy Bunting (played by Joan Barry), is deeply attracted to him. Daisy's boyfriend, Detective Joe Bates (played by Malcolm Keen), becomes jealous and, under the landlady's instigation, obtains a search warrant to invade his room. The police find a handgun and a map indicating previous murder locations, as well as a photograph of the first victim. The lodger claims that the girl is his sister and that he is merely searching for the real killer, but he is still arrested. With Daisy's help, he escapes, but he is discovered in a pub while still handcuffed, forcing him into a corner. This film features an unforgettable shot that Hitchcock called a way of replacing sound in the silent film era, where the "lodger’s gloved right hand slowly slides down the staircase handrail."
