In May 1940, France found itself in a passive situation against the German army, potentially facing defeat at any moment. Charles received an urgent order: he had just been appointed a general and needed to immediately head to the front lines to command troops in battle. He had to leave his wife and three children behind, but after ensuring their safety, he departed with a sense of relief. However, after one battle, Charles felt overwhelmed and anxious, fearing he lacked the ability to lead the many French soldiers to victory, while also worrying about his family and wanting to end the war quickly to return to them. During a military discussion, Pétain expressed doubts and negativity about France's ability to win against Germany, advocating for negotiations with Hitler. Charles knew that even if negotiations were to take place, France would still be in a passive position, so he insisted on continuing the resistance. At this time, Charles learned that he had lost contact with his family, who, like thousands of other French families, had been captured by the Germans during their escape, with their fate still unknown. This further strengthened Charles's resolve to continue fighting, not just for his family, but to protect French territory and to ensure a peaceful and stable life for the French people.
