The story takes place during the Spanish Civil War in 1937. Amidst the chaos of war, a man named Robert (played by Gary Cooper) from the United States frequently appears on the front lines, leading the Spanish people in their fight against the brutal rule of local fascists. They blow up trains and engage in street battles, driving the enemy back steadily. On this day, Robert takes on a new mission, teaming up with a militia-made guerrilla group to blow up a iron bridge that the enemy must cross to attack. During this process, Robert encounters a girl named María (played by Ingrid Bergman). María was once the daughter of the mayor and lived a happy life, but the war destroyed her family, leaving her orphaned and subject to humiliation. Their shared revolutionary beliefs quickly bring Robert and María together.
