Tonya (played by Margot Robbie) grew up in a broken family, living a dependent life with her mother (played by Allison Janney). Tonya's mother was a cold and domineering woman who saw the potential in her three-year-old daughter to become a figure skater. Thus, the little girl was sent to a figure skating team coached by Diane (played by Julianne Nicholson) to begin her training. Tonya spent almost her entire childhood on the ice, until one day she met a man named Jeff (played by Sebastian Stan) at the skating rink, and the two quickly fell in love. Jeff changed Tonya's life but also became her disaster. From then on, Tonya had to face not only increasingly tough training but also Jeff's physical abuse. In one competition, Tonya completed a triple axel jump, becoming the first American athlete to achieve this feat, leading to her newfound fame.
