Gui Mei (Yang Huishan) travels alone from Nanjing to Taiwan in search of her fiancé but is unsuccessful. She temporarily stays at her cousin's house, where she is treated like a servant. To escape this life of relying on others, she marries the middle-aged man Hou Yongnian (Li Liqun), who was abandoned by his wife, and becomes the stepmother of three children. However, due to Hou Yongnian's gambling addiction and his keeping of a mistress, she finds herself jumping from the wolf's den into the tiger's lair. After having children, Gui Mei goes to Japan with Hou Yongnian to work as a domestic helper for financial reasons. By chance, she learns excellent cooking skills at a local Chinese restaurant and returns to Taiwan to open her own restaurant, "Xia Fei Zhi Jia." However, while she manages the household frugally, Hou Yongnian regresses to his old ways.
