In wartime Europe in 1942, Olga, a Russian noblewoman who immigrated to France and is also a member of the French Resistance, is captured by the Gestapo after they discover she is hiding two Jewish children in her apartment. Her case is assigned to Jules, the chief of police under Gestapo control. Olga tries to barter her body for her freedom; however, the lecherous yet timid Frenchman hesitates and is quickly sent to meet his fate by the Resistance. After Jules is shot, Olga is imprisoned in a Jewish concentration camp where she encounters a former acquaintance, a German officer named Helmut. Before the war began, the two spent a wonderful holiday together with friends in Tuscany, where Helmut fell in love with Olga at first sight. Now, the beautiful and charming Russian noblewoman finds herself as a prisoner, scrambling for survival by scavenging for German boots and providing services to the female camp guards for a couple of cigarettes. Meanwhile, the German youth, who loves music and Chekhov, has abandoned his fortune and everything to commit himself fully to the Nazi cause he believes in. In the hellish concentration camp where over ten thousand die each day, the two embark on a twisted relationship. As the Nazis face complete defeat in the late stages of the war, Helmut prepares false passports, deciding to escape with Olga to the South American German colonies, which sends Olga, who harbors a desperate desire for survival, into ecstatic heights. However, when Olga unexpectedly meets the two Jewish boys she once hid in her Paris apartment, a moment of doubt overtakes her, and she changes her mind at the last moment.
