Li Qiushui (played by Brigitte Lin) from the Tianshan Sect falls in love with her senior brother, Xiaoyaozi, unaware that Xiaoyaozi actually loves her twin sister, Li Canghai (also played by Brigitte Lin). At the same time, Tianshan Tonglao, Wu Xingyun (played by Gong Li), harbors a love for Li Canghai that transcends gender. Xiaoyaozi is poisoned by traitor Ding Chunqiu (played by Xu Shaoqiang) and is forced to retreat to Floating Mist Peak, setting up a "Linglong Chessboard" to await a kind-hearted and deeply Buddhist fated person, Xu Zhu (played by Lin Wenlong), to pass on his century of martial arts and hope that he will clean up the sect's issues. In a bid to seize the treasures of Shaolin, Ding Chunqiu leads A Zi (played by Zhang Min) and colludes with Li Qiushui and others to bloodily cleanse Shaolin. With the help of Wu Xingyun, Xu Zhu, who inherits Xiaoyaozi's lifelong martial arts, is appointed in a time of crisis and engages in a duel with Ding Chunqiu.
