Toula (Nia Vardalos) was born and raised in America, yet lives in a giant Greek world, where her huge family embodies her father's authoritative will, insisting that Greece is the source of the world’s spiritual energy. Growing up, the most she heard from her mother and neurotic grandmother were comments about marrying a Greek, having a bunch of Greek kids, and keeping her belly full until the end of the world. At 30, Toula is messy and overweight, continuing to hear her father's nagging during a rainy night. However, when she walks into the family restaurant where she works every day, she decides to change her fate! She studies, goes to a beauty salon to spruce herself up, and when she exudes confidence, her destined prince, Ian (John Corbett), appears. The two fall in love at first sight and can’t wait to start their new family. For this large Greek family, Ian is definitely an outsider, and the complexities and struggles of the wedding are just beginning, as differing values spark a series of hilarious situations.
