The financially struggling actress Madeline and her lawyer friend Pauline are living in a small apartment, tirelessly dealing with various debt collections every day. One day, a police officer shows up at their door. It turns out that the famous producer Montferrand has been shot dead in his home, and Madeline, who had previously visited Montferrand and was sexually harassed by him, becomes the prime suspect. What's more, Madeline has a handgun. During the questioning at the police station, Madeline and Pauline think that if they admit to this crime as self-defense, they not only won't go to jail but might also become famous. Reality aligns with their expectations; Madeline walks away from the courtroom unscathed, and due to her brilliant testimony and Pauline's defense, the two gain fame and start living a prosperous life. Seeing the two gaining both fame and fortune, the real killer can't sit still and comes to ask them for money. Anticipating a tragic conclusion once the truth comes out, the three propose a collaboration. Ultimately, they team up to star in a play titled "The Ordeal of Suzette," adapted from this case.
