The death of his wife hits Howard Beale (Peter Finch), the star anchor of the television network, hard, plunging him into despair and sorrow. The network decides to fire Howard, who has lost interest in his work, and his old friend Max (William Holden) is chosen to deliver the bad news. Upon learning of his impending dismissal, Howard, who has toiled for the network for many years, is furious and shockingly announces to the audience in the next day's program that he will commit suicide live on air. Howard's outrageous act angers the network's executives, and it gives President Frank (Robert Duvall), who has always been dissatisfied with Max, an opportunity to stir up trouble. In the following day's news broadcast, Howard is expected to apologize for his careless remarks, but in a fit of rage, he instead launches into a tirade against the various ills of contemporary America. Producer Diana (Faye Dunaway) sees a business opportunity in Howard's behavior, bribes Frank, and becomes the force behind Howard's actions.
