The new town of Sabaudia, created by Mussolini, is filled with a sense of decay. Elio (played by Elio Germano) lives with his brother Mariko (played by Riccardo Scamarcio) in the remnants of brick buildings. Elio is an anachronistic rebel who joins the new neo-fascist MSI party despite his parents’ and brother’s opposition. Mariko is a leftist. The film portrays the social background of the town at that time through the ideological conflicts between the two brothers, reflecting the political and social realities of the era. It also depicts the social trauma and lifestyle of Italy in the 1960s and 70s. As a dazzling star, the brother shines on the leftist stage, captivating supporters with his charm; the protagonist, who was originally heading to the seminary, abandons his opportunity to connect with God under the influence of risqué photos brought by his brother. Through the changing relationships among brothers, lovers, and family, the film sketches Italy's history of the past two decades. The script is by the same person who wrote "The Brilliant Times," albeit with a more concise style; passion and twists remain at its core.
