A down-and-out ronin, Sanjuro (played by Toshiro Mifune), arrives in a small town where two rival gangs, led by Seibei (played by Kyu Sazanka) and Ushitora (played by Tatsuya Nakadai), are fighting for territory, hiring men and causing chaos, which leaves the townsfolk suffering. Sanjuro decides to manipulate the situation, enticing both sides to hire him, then inciting them to fight each other so he can profit from the chaos and eliminate both factions. However, the situation changes when Ushitora's brother, Unosuke (played by Tatsuya Nakadai), enters the fray with a pistol in hand, gaining the upper hand. Seibei's forces are defeated, and Sanjuro is seriously injured. Yet, a final confrontation is inevitable, and how can the outnumbered Sanjuro eliminate his opponents, Ushitora, and Hanjuro?
