Like other works by Godard, this film does not follow the traditional narrative arc of cinema: beginning, conflict, and resolution. Instead, it presents the complex yet empty life of the female protagonist, Juliette Jansen (played by Marina Vlady), over the course of 24 hours. Set in France in the mid-1960s, a time of changing social and philosophical trends, Juliette appears to be a middle-class married mother, but her true identity is that of a part-time prostitute, struggling alone with the heavy pressures of life. Juliette first takes her crying, screaming child to a man who specializes in looking after the children of call girls, and then begins her day. Shopping, doing housework, taking care of her child—her mundane routine is often interrupted by appointments with clients. The narrative structure of the film is already fragmented, filled with various voice-overs, subtitles, symbols, and unrelated visual shots. Although there was a script during filming, Godard required the actors to break through the "fourth wall," creating dialogue spontaneously and interacting with staff off-camera, which imbues the film with a sense of experimentation and critical awareness.
