The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Naoki Prize-winning author Kiyoshi Shigematsu, directed by Yukiko Mishima, known for "Glass Reeds." The story follows a divorced man, Shin (played by Tadanobu Asano), who has a child and lives a simple and happy life with his second wife, Nanae (played by Rina Tanaka), and her two daughters from a previous marriage. When Nanae becomes pregnant, her eldest daughter expresses a desire to meet her biological father, Sawada (played by Kankuro Nakamura), who had previously abused Nanae, leading to their divorce. Both Nanae and Shin strongly oppose this meeting, while the eldest daughter desperately resists, causing Shin to feel frustrated and even develop negative feelings towards the unborn child.
