The film is adapted from the graphic novel of the same name by Iranian female illustrator Marjane Satrapi, telling her coming-of-age story in an autobiographical format, reflecting the social changes in Iran. After 1979, Iran initiated the Islamic Revolution, leading to social turmoil. The failure of the revolution further dashed hopes for democracy in Iran, which became increasingly conservative, causing immense suffering among the people. Nine-year-old Marjane, mature and sensitive, cleverly evaded the authorities and became infatuated with Western punk bands and pop music, immersing herself in her own world. With the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War, life in Iran became even more difficult. As Marjane grew up, her increasingly bold behavior worried her parents, and at the age of 14, they sent her to school in Austria. In Austria, as an Iranian, Marjane had to face discrimination and feelings of inferiority from others. When she finally overcame her psychological barriers and gained recognition, the pain of love and longing for her homeland made her decide to return to her parents. At that time, Iran was still enduring the trials of war, and the restrictions of religion on women's lives became increasingly severe. Marjane began to doubt whether she should continue living in this authoritarian country.
