Mitsumura Shinnojo (played by Takuya Kimura) is an ordinary lower-ranking samurai whose job is to test food for the lord. The prepared meals are first tasted by the poison tester, ensuring there are no adverse reactions before serving them to the lord. During one such test, Shinnojo goes blind, losing his sight which renders him practically useless. His fate quickly spirals downwards, but with the help of his beautiful and virtuous wife, Kayo (played by Rie Tamoto), he begins to face life again. However, the Mitsumura family loses their source of income as a result. At the suggestion of friends and family, Kayo asks her superior samurai, Shida Fujiya (played by Mitsugoro Bando), to intercede with the lord in hopes of retaining half of Shinnojo’s salary. But Shida uses Shinnojo's salary as leverage and forces Kayo into a relationship with him. Upon learning of this, Shinnojo is unable to accept the reality, divorces his wife, and decides to fight Shida to restore his samurai dignity, which is more precious than life itself.
