A 204-minute long film absolutely requires a grand theme. In this regard, Italian director Mario Martone's "We Believe" succeeds. Influenced by the French Revolution of the 1820s, three young friends decide to dedicate themselves to the revolutionary cause for democracy. The film's main storyline follows the entanglements and experiences of these three friends across three different time periods, while also showcasing the founding history of the Kingdom of Italy in a small yet expansive manner. In this process, the three friends face various twists and grievances due to their different personalities and family backgrounds, including fratricidal conflict arising from differing understandings of the revolutionary cause. Under the direction of veteran filmmaker Mario Martone, the film's visuals are grand and the scenes are breathtaking, but in fact, it would be more fitting to be edited into a television series, allowing for more fleshed-out and vivid character portrayals.
