In 2018, Guatemala, more than twenty years after the end of the civil war, transitional justice is still progressing slowly. Every inch of seemingly peaceful land may be hiding nameless bones that desperately need to be unearthed, and every silent mother's face may conceal a painful past that is hard to revisit. A young man responsible for identifying the remains receives a clue from an elderly Maya woman that perhaps he will find his father, whom he has never met, in a mass grave in a remote mountainous area. Ignoring the advice of his mother and colleagues, he wholeheartedly throws himself into the search, and his difficult-to-mention origins will unexpectedly be revealed... There are no hoarse accusations, no plot twists; in the face of provocative themes of genocide, "Digging Up Love's Scars" uniquely portrays the courage of the next generation to confront the truth, the scars and resilience of survivor women, with admirable simplicity and straightforwardness. The film received the SACD Award at the Cannes Critics' Week and was recognized with the Golden Camera Award. "We have a strong sense of responsibility to avoid any excessive dramatization, as this is a story that affects many Guatemalans." — César Díaz
