Five-year-old Zeze (played by João Guilherme de Ávila) is a boy who is quite different from other children; he seems to be much more mature than his peers. Born on Christmas Day, he is initially seen as a gift from God by relatives and friends, but he is born into a poor and troubled family. After his father’s career failed and his mother and sister had to work in a factory, Zeze's treatment at home deteriorated drastically, and he often faced inexplicable beatings and scoldings. Despite the hardships in his life, Zeze still warms everyone around him with his enthusiasm and kindness. He enjoys sharing his misfortunes with the imaginary friends he has, among which a sweet orange tree is regarded as his closest companion. A man named Abú (played by José de Abreu) enters Zeze's life and gradually replaces the orange tree, becoming the only support Zeze can rely on in reality.
