The story takes place on the picturesque island of Sicily, where the noble Baron Cefalù (Marcello Mastroianni) is a declining aristocrat. His dull marriage to his wife, Salia (Margherita Girelli), leaves him feeling quite bored, and coupled with the constant seduction from his stunning cousin, Angela (Stefania Sandrelli), Cefalù is determined to get rid of Salia. However, divorce was illegal in Italy at that time, so to escape the marriage, Baron Cefalù has to seek other means. After various "efforts," Baron Cefalù finally manages to kill his wife but is given only a very short prison sentence. Behind bars, he fantasizes about a future filled with happiness, his heart brimming with hope and excitement. However, when freedom finally arrives, will his life truly be as beautiful as he imagines?
