The story takes place in Germany in 1968, where a young boy named Wolfgang (played by Louis Hofmann) struggles with his tense relationship with his stepfather after his mother remarries. Following a conflict, his stepfather sends Wolfgang to a reformatory, where he begins a life filled with pain and torment. Wolfgang, being stubborn, refuses to become a slave to the brutal regime. His repeated struggles and resistance only lead to more injuries, but the warmth from his memories of his mother keeps him going. Wolfgang decides to escape with his friend Anton (played by Langston Beckford-Uibel). After facing numerous hardships, they eventually return to their small town. However, when his mother sees Wolfgang, she does not react with the joy he had imagined; even more cruelly, it is not long before he is sent back to the reformatory by his mother and stepfather.
