Marcus Messner is an introverted, high-achieving freshman who feels relieved to finally escape his overprotective parents' constant nagging about his safety. While studying in the library, Marcus meets the beautiful student Olivia Hutton, and they quickly fall in love. After a quarrel with his roommate, Marcus moves to another dormitory, which results in a reprimand from the principal. The principal believes Marcus has social issues and tries to persuade him to conform to many problems at school, but Marcus stands his ground and argues with the principal, only to be hospitalized due to a sudden appendicitis. During his hospitalization, Marcus feels extremely happy because of Olivia's frequent visits and dreams of a future life with her. Upon hearing about his illness, Marcus's mother rushes to the hospital and, after discovering the scars on Olivia's wrist caused by a suicide attempt, demands that they break up. Olivia disappears, and when Marcus seeks out the principal, he learns that Olivia, who has a history of mental illness, has had another breakdown and was sent for treatment. Faced with his parents' neurotic over-worry, the school's dogmatic educational approach, and the departure of his beloved, the young Marcus's suppressed emotions explode, leading him to a battlefield shrouded in smoke. The film is adapted from Philip Roth's 2008 novel of the same name.
