Joy (Cameron Diaz 饰) loses herself while centering her life around her boyfriend Mason. However, Mason gets tired of this and breaks up with Joy. Jack (Ashton Kutcher 饰) works at his father's furniture factory but doesn't put in much effort, leading his disappointed father to fire him in anger. The two disheartened individuals, encouraged by their friends Tipper (Lake Bell 饰) and Hate (Rob Corddry 饰), decide to go on vacation to Las Vegas. In the neon lights and excitement, the two wounded souls open up to each other and have a wild and wonderful night. They wake up in the morning to find that they are married, and a gamble where Joy pays while Jack provides the effort wins them a jackpot of $3 million. Both want to keep the money for themselves and seek out a judge. The judge, punishing them for treating marriage frivolously, orders the winnings to be frozen for 6 months. Refusing to back down, they decide, based on their friends' advice, to "outdo" each other and force the other to file for divorce so they can claim the prize alone.
