The story takes place in Florence in 1938, where Mary (played by Kristin Scott Thomas) is about to embark on her leisurely holiday. By chance, Mary meets the older businessman Edgar (played by James Fox), who immediately begins to pursue her passionately. Although Mary does not love Edgar, his wealth and the prospect of a luxurious life leave her in a dilemma. At this critical juncture, three men of vastly different statuses and personalities appear before Mary: the handsome American Larry (played by Sean Penn), the fascist officer Leopat (played by Massimo Ghini), and the broke young man Rachel (played by Jeremy Davies), who all show interest in her. Mary feels sympathy for Rachel's dire situation and takes care of him, leading Rachel to misinterpret her kindness as love, planting the seeds of tragedy.
