Caliendo (Al Pacino) is sentenced to 30 years in prison for drug trafficking. In the fifth year of his imprisonment, lawyer David (Sean Penn) helps him out. After his release, Caliendo's goal is to earn $75,000 to leave and repay his debt to David. With determination to turn his life around, Caliendo can't escape the tricks of fate. When he reluctantly agrees to be a spectator in a drug deal for his cousin, he gets involved in a black-on-black crime. After securing the drugs, he receives $25,000 as a reward from the dealer. After investing the money in a nightclub called Paradise, he starts looking for his woman, Kaye. When Caliendo finds Kaye, their relationship takes a delicate turn. At this point, David receives money from a mafia boss and promises to help his partner escape from prison. David then approaches Caliendo for help.
