The Chi family has been doing business for generations and has a strong background. The Gu family is a prestigious household filled with scholarly traditions and guile. The Chi family's young master, Chi Rui, marrying the Gu family's young lady, Gu Zhi Xia, causes a sensation throughout the city. Gu Zhi Xia is like a celestial being, and Chi Rui is captivated at first sight. However, at the moment of consummation, the notorious bandit, Xiang Tian, bursts into the bridal chamber to take Zhi Xia away, as they have already secretly promised each other their lives. Chi Rui stops Xiang Tian’s actions and, surrounded by the police, kills Xiang Tian in a gunfight. Zhi Xia is found to be pregnant, and it is naturally Xiang Tian's child. Zhi Xia begs the Chi family for a divorce, which Chi's mother is willing to grant, but Chi Rui stubbornly refuses, insisting that Zhi Xia is his woman and only he can decide her fate. He wants Zhi Xia to abort the child and stay in the Chi family. Zhi Xia vows to never comply and ultimately gives birth to the child against all odds. Chi Rui then marries another woman, You Rong. Knowing Chi Rui’s feelings for Zhi Xia, You Rong colludes with Chi’s mother to torment Zhi Xia in every possible way. Zhi Xia endures their abuse, while Chi Rui turns a blind eye, as his feelings for Zhi Xia are complex; he both loves and hates her. Eventually, You Rong accidentally falls and miscarries. You Rong wrongly blames Zhi Xia for her miscarriage, inciting Chi’s mother's fury, who wants to throw Zhi Xia into a well and also kill her child. In a critical moment, Chi Rui arrives, saves Zhi Xia, but cannot quell the anger of Chi’s mother and You Rong; thus, he throws Zhi Xia’s child into the well. Grieving over the loss of her child, Zhi Xia goes mad, refusing to eat or drink, fixated on death. One night, Chi Rui carries her into a cart, intending to let her go, and in the cart, there is her child. What Chi Rui threw in that day was just a swaddling cloth. The child did not die. As Zhi Xia's cart leaves, the seemingly dead Xiang Tian escapes from prison, having survived that night, enduring great torment while locked up by Chi Rui. Upon hearing news of Tian’s escape, Chi Rui rides through the night to bring Zhi Xia back. He has a change of heart; he cannot simply let Zhi Xia go, how can he allow their family of three to reunite...? The escaped Xiang Tian eagerly seeks to find Zhi Xia to take her away from captivity, but learns that Zhi Xia has given birth to a son. Chi Rui also uses the child as leverage, manipulating Zhi Xia to set a trap for Xiang Tian. Desperate, Xiang Tian believes the woman he loves—Zhi Xia—has betrayed him, so he takes the child up a mountain, using the child to lure Zhi Xia to the stronghold; however, Chi Rui follows them here, leading Xiang Tian to think Zhi Xia has betrayed him once again. Engaging in a deadly game of roulette with Chi Rui, which involves shooting oneself with a revolver, Zhi Xia can’t stop the two men driven mad by love, and she raises the knife in her hand. Zhi Xia dies, leading Xiang Tian to finally understand that he has misunderstood Zhi Xia, and he also takes his own life with a gun. The only survivor, Chi Rui, realizes his actions have been selfish, but it's too late. Returning to the Chi family, he follows Xiang Tian's dying wish: to take care of Zhi Xia and Tian's child.
