On Valentine's Day 1900, the Appleyard College for Girls in Australia, which follows the English educational system, organized a picnic to Hanging Rock. Orphan Sara was unable to join due to delayed tuition payments and could only watch as her friend Miranda and the other students set off under the guidance of Miss Mcraw. Upon arriving, Miranda and three others broke away from the group to climb, where they were discovered by Michael and servant Albert, who were also at the rock for a picnic. Michael fell in love with Miranda at first sight and followed them. That night, the principal received a report that Mcraw and Miranda's group were missing. The police immediately launched an investigation, and the principal was extremely anxious about the reputation of the college, while Sara, heartbroken over losing Miranda, was unable to eat or sleep. Michael and Albert searched the cliffs and found one missing girl, but Miranda remained unaccounted for, leading to Sara being sent back to the orphanage by the principal in despair, and she chose to take her own life… This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Joan Lindsay and won the Best Cinematography Award at the 1977 BAFTA.
