The film is based on true events. The story takes place on a small island in Norway called Bastøy, where many young prisoners are held, the youngest of whom is just 11 years old, and the oldest is only 18. Every day, in this closed and oppressive environment, the children are forced to work excessively, as this is the only way they can obtain enough food to survive. Here, beatings and verbal abuse of the prisoners are commonplace, often due to a minor mistake, and sometimes even without any reason at all. In such a horrible environment, the prisoners are tamed, and no one thinks of rebellion. Seventeen-year-old Erling (played by Benjamin Helstad) has just arrived at this island of demons, where he is to serve his sentence. The brutal life on the island drives Erling to despair, and when the guards' oppression reaches a breaking point and leads to tragedy, it is Erling who leads his companions in violent resistance. Just as Erling seizes control of the island, a 150-man army sent by the Norwegian government is rapidly approaching.
