A city occupied by foreign troops faces severe food shortages, and the people's lives are filled with hardship. A young woman has no choice but to bring her twin sons to live with their grandmother in the countryside. This "grandmother" is illiterate, dirty, stingy, vicious, and even a murderer. The brothers grow up in this harsh environment, honing their survival skills through mutual beatings, fasting, and various ways to make themselves strong. They carefully record the daily occurrences in a large notebook. As the pages of the journal are turned, a cold, nightmarish parable gradually unfolds.
