Former Navy warrior Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) becomes paralyzed from the waist down due to injuries sustained in battle. He decides to take the place of his deceased twin brother and travels to Pandora to control an “Avatar” hybrid created by Dr. Grace (Sigourney Weaver), which combines human genes with those of the local Na'vi tribe. Jake's goal is to infiltrate the Na'vi tribe and diplomatically persuade them to leave their ancestral home voluntarily, allowing the SecFor corporation to completely deforest the area and extract the expensive "unobtanium" mineral from the ground. During his exploration of Pandora, Jake encounters the Na'vi princess Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), from whom he learns the survival skills and relationship with nature of the Na'vi people. Meanwhile, SecFor's manager and military representative Colonel Miles (Stephen Lang) gradually loses patience and decides to resort to force to drive the Na'vi away… The film is shot in 3D and cost a total of $500 million to produce and distribute, making it the most expensive film in history. It won three Academy Awards at the 82nd Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction.
