The story takes place in 1946. After the civil war, there is nothing left in a certain part of central Spain but despair, poverty, and exiles. A boy constantly on the run finds shelter in a ditch. After the search party leaves, he faces a dangerous and arid plain. Fortunately, he meets a shepherd on his way across the plain, and the two eventually choose to travel together. Along the way, they must deal with hunger and thirst while evading those sent by the foreman to find the boy. The shepherd becomes the boy's mentor: he explains his profession and his understanding of life. As time passes, the shepherd also learns about the fears the boy is trying to escape from.
