The story takes place in southern France in the 20th century, where Eugénie (played by Daniel Auteuil) and his uncle César (played by Yves Montand) have long coveted the fertile land of an elderly man. They finally conspire to have him killed. What they did not anticipate was that the seemingly solitary old man had a son named Johann (played by Gérard Depardieu), whose mother was none other than César's former lover, whom he had abandoned. César has harbored resentment for this and has remained unmarried his entire life. Johann arrives in the countryside with his wife Émilie (played by Elisabeth Depardieu) and daughter Manon (played by Ernestine Mazurowna). Being kind-hearted, he is completely unaware of the malice from César and Eugénie, and lives a carefree life. César cuts off the water source that irrigates Johann's land, causing Johann's fields to wither and his livestock to die of thirst. In desperation, Johann falls ill and passes away. Heartbroken, Émilie leaves this sorrowful place, while César and Eugénie finally achieve their goal of obtaining the land. However, the entanglement between the two families does not end there.
