In a tranquil and peaceful small village in southern China, Tang Ling (played by Walter Huston) lives a happy and busy life with his family. His two eldest sons are already married and have children, while the youngest son (played by Hurd Hatfield) is still filled with youthful passion. The wife of the second son, Xiao Yu (played by Katharine Hepburn), is a woman with a rebellious spirit, gaining advanced knowledge and progressive ideas through reading. However, all of this is shattered by the Japanese invasion, leading to a dramatic change in their lives. Faced with a devastated home, the young and brave female militia member Xiao Yu leads the villagers in a courageous struggle against the invaders. This film, produced by MGM and adapted from the novel of the same name by American writer Pearl S. Buck, was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress at the 17th Academy Awards in 1945, as well as for Best Cinematography (Black-and-White).
