Introverted Polish youth Trelkovsky (played by Roman Polanski) arrives alone in Paris, hoping to rent an apartment. The previous tenant, Simone Choule (played by Romain Bouteille), committed suicide by jumping out of the window for reasons unknown. After Simone passes away in the hospital, Trelkovsky smoothly becomes the new tenant. The joy of moving in does not bring him much happiness; the oppressive atmosphere around him constantly disturbs his nerves. The old apartment is inhabited by many rigid and gloomy residents who complain about Trelkovsky making too much noise and collectively ostracize other tenants... This poor young man, despite his cautious approach, is gradually driven to the brink by them. Trelkovsky starts to realize the reasons behind Simone Choule's suicide, and he discovers that he too is being led toward destruction by this group of strange tenants...
