Mother (Sonja Richter) is seriously ill, and the brothers Elmar (Harald Kaiser Hermann) and Erik (Albert Rudbeck Lindhardt) are left without care, forced to be sent to a boarding school run by Principal Heck (Lars Mikkelsen). Heck is a man who believes in violence; he firmly believes that only through force can the children in the school truly be convinced and guided onto the right path. The brothers suffer immense torment in this place, which is called a school but is essentially a prison. The promise that their mother would come to take them home for Christmas becomes their only motivation to survive. However, after waiting and waiting, all they receive is news of their mother's death. Lilian (Sofie Gråbøl) is the new literature teacher at the school, and she keenly realizes the inhumane atrocities occurring there but feels powerless to do anything about it.
