The story takes place in a certain area of Jiangnan during the Cultural Revolution. Jia Yimin (Ye Zhikang), the director of the Anti-Reform Hospital Revolutionary Committee, responds to the instructions of the "Central Cultural Revolution" liaison, kicking out the "stinky old nine" and appointing a "young pioneer." He surprisingly assigns the cook Yao Yao (Xie Yuan), who has only studied medicine for a few days, to perform surgery on emergency patient Lu Daniu (Wang Guojing). As a result, he ends up cutting off a section of the patient's healthy intestine, while the diseased appendix remains in the abdomen. Aware of his incompetence, Yao Yao requests to return to the kitchen, but Jia Yimin insists on training him to become a "model doctor" and have him perform gallbladder surgery on patient Su Zongtang (Shi Ling).
