As early as December 2010, Anderson intended to adapt Thomas Pynchon's "Inherent Vice," but the project was temporarily shelved due to the earlier funding of another film, "The Master." "Inherent Vice" has a structure similar to Chandler's detective novels, where Los Angeles private detective Doc unexpectedly encounters his ex-girlfriend Shasta and hears from her an unsubstantiated story about a bizarre kidnapping case, where the victim—her current lover—is a "wealthy" real estate developer. Doc knows well that "love" is a vague term that can lead to a string of troubles, yet he is mysteriously drawn into Shasta's story and gets deeper involved, encountering surfers, pimps, drug dealers, rock musicians, and a loan shark who has committed murder, all of whom appear and vanish...
