In 1805, Napoleon dominated the European continent, and in naval warfare, only the British fleet could compete with him. Captain Jack Aubrey (played by Russell Crowe) of the HMS Surprise is ordered to intercept the French warship Acheron as it enters the South Pacific. The two ships first encounter each other off the north coast of Brazil, where the Acheron, with its superior firepower and armor, defeats the Surprise, forcing Jack to escape narrowly in thick fog. Although the initial battle is unfavorable, Jack, who once served under Admiral Nelson, is confident in his ship and refuses to turn back, choosing instead to study his opponent. Soon, the two ships meet again, and Jack employs a baiting tactic to turn the tide, pursuing the Acheron to the stormy waters of Cape Horn. Jack's determination causes his friend, ship's doctor Stephen, to voice his opposition, but Jack has an elite team that remains steadfast through various difficulties, maintaining their targeted training. An unexpected injury to Stephen prompts Jack to halt the chase and temporarily land on an island to regroup; this unexpected stop provides Jack with inspiration for combat. Before long, the Acheron reappears, and the two ships finally face their fateful confrontation... This film won the Oscar for Best Cinematography and Best Sound, among more than ten awards in 2004.
